We know Mullein works wonders inside of the body but did you know that Mullein outside of the body is just as good of a powerhouse herbal remedy. After a recent bout with a respiratory infection, this salve was used in my household frequently as a congestion aid. It has also worked wonders in my personal nail growth. I was a frequent nail picker and nail biter and after 1 month, my nails GREW! They were the longest they had ever been! All of my salves are moistening but this one…this one set the bar really high!
Mullein (Vebascum Thapsus) is a cooling and moistening herb. It is anti inflammatory and anti microbial. Externally, mullein works to speed the healing of cuts, wounds, and abrasions. It also helps to encourage lymph flow and ease muscle, joint, and back pain. Poultices of mullein can be used to draw boils and splinters from within the body to a point of extraction. It can also be used as a chest rub which is what our salve is designed to do. It’s aim is to clear congestion and soothe a congested chest. Mullein has been considered generally safe, when taken internally note that the tiny hairs on mullein can irritate the throat so strain any internal medicines through a fine mesh strainer.
Apple Mint a variety of Mint, (mentha suaveolens) is more commonly used as ground cover and in culinary uses. I love using apple mint in herbal tea blends as it is such a fragrant variety. Apple Mint has strong anti bacterial properties and works wonders for digestion internally. Externally, apple mint soothes and it’s aromatic scent calms the mind. Too much of any herb is cause for caution but an overconsumption of apple mint internally can cause stomach discomfort other than that, it is considered generally safe.
