Sun Tea Recipe

1–2 minutes

Summer’s here! Why not sit back and enjoy some delicious sun tea.

What is Sun Tea?

Sun Tea is made by using a method of steeping tea and herbs in water in the sun for hours pulling vital compounds from the plants to create a delicious and refreshing blend.

Using the energy from the sun to make a pitcher of tea.

You can make this blend in or outside of the house. As long as the sun is shining you can make delicious sun tea.

Recipe:

  • 2 qt water
  • 3-4 bags of black tea – decaffeniated
  • fresh lemon balm – handful
  • fresh cat nip
  • Pitcher and time

Directions to make:

On a bright and sunny day, combine the ingredients and set out in the sun for 4-6 hours.

Strain and Sweeten as desired.

Time outside: just put outside at 1:30pm
Time outside : 4 1/2 hrs
Time outside: 6 1/2 hrs
Done

Once the blend is done add sugar or your preferred sweetener to taste and let sit in the fridge.

Herbal sun tea is a great addition to summer meals and can be made using a handful of herbs.

Some of my favorites include:

  • Cat nip
  • Lemon balm
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Fresh fruit like peaches, strawberry, lemons, etc.

Caution: Making sun tea should be done by adhering to safe food handling procedures. Bacteria can grow in warmth as the tea sits out in the sun for long periods of time. To reduce your risk it is preferred to use a clean, glass container over plastic. The water also does not get hot enough to effectively kill bacteria.
